HOOTERS “Big Boy’s Toys”

As you can guess from the photo, we had no problem getting our guys to staff this August promotional event at Hooters of Manchester. The company asked Land & Sea to trailer up one of our eddy current Motorcycle/ATV Chassis dynos for their “Big Boy’s Toys Day” bike horsepower shoot-out. Land & Sea accepted donations for each test pull which we sent to the New Hampshire Technical Institute. (By the way, we’re still looking for one cheapskate who only put $1.50 into the donation pot!)

The crowd gave our sales guys a great opportunity to prove the value of DYNO-MAX 2000’s “hands-off” features like Smart Record and Smart Print. These features make it possible to 100% automate this kind of high volume testing. We had bikes drive on, get tested, roll off, and receive their printed reports -in under 5-minutes.

Hooters’ own Team Suzuki even took advantage of the dyno to run up their racing bikes. However, everyone had the most fun when they ran a tiny scooter with 12" diameter tires and a “weed wacker” engine. We always knew this dyno was versatile!

DYNOmite Owner’s manual

The 2003 DYNOmite User’s Manual is now on-line. It can be downloaded, for free,(by registered owners) from our web site’s DYNOmite Support area.

If you are still using an older manual, you should review this current version. At over 170 pages, it contains lots of useful and updated procedures, photos, tips, and safety warnings.

NH ATV Jamboree & NHSA’s Grass Drag Championships

Land & Sea recently displayed at a couple of large off-road events. September’s “Mudstock” ATV Jamboree had everything from drag racing to “tractor” pulls and mud crossing pits -all to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Then in October, as usual, we attended the annual NHSA’s Grass Drag Championships This event has become one of the largest snowmobile drag races in the world.

If you were one of the many existing DYNOmite owners that stopped by either of our booths, we would like to thank you. We enjoyed meeting many of you, face to face, for the first time.

These two events cater to very different types of vehicles. So, it was surprising how our new trailerable Motorcycle/ATV Chassis Dyno (which was on display at both locations) kept generating the same identical questions, from both crowds.

#1) Yes, the absorber, load control, data acquisition, and software can be easily swapped between bikes, ATV, and both PWC & snowmobile engine testing. It’s like four dynos in one!

#2) Yes, the trailer package is optional. The dyno is sold, alone, for in-shop testing only (or if you just prefer to build your own trailer). Either way it remains the lowest profile / widest deck unit available, making testing big bikes much easier and more secure feeling

#3) Yes, we do know that it is the slickest looking and nicest built unit on the market. We planned it that way from the start. More importantly, wait until you see how easy it is to make it do what you need to do!

New AFR Vacuum pump

Are you trying to use an Air/Fuel Ratio module or wide band O2 sensor for chassis dyno testing many different vehicles? If so, you know what a hassle it is trying to install the sensor. Our new vacuum pump assembly can solve this problem.

The pump system uses your shop air and a regulated venturi vacuum pump to draw hot exhaust gas into the sensor. The unit’s high temperature sample probe is semi-flexible and long enough to reach tailpipe gasses that have not been contaminated (diluted) by fresh air.

The adjustable height probe assembly can accommodate most tail pipe orientations. It also features a condensation separator that protects your expensive sensor from water vapor damage. The unique design of this separator avoids the constant filter “jar” maintenance hassle, so familiar to users of older style vacuum pumps.

The system can also be ordered complete with a sensor and 0-5 volt output Air/Fuel Ratio Module. The module offers easy open air offset calibration, near linear0-5 volt analog output (with a connector that is plug-in compatible with your DYNOmite Full Function Harness), and provides a typical +/-2% (or better) accuracy.

DYNOmite 2003 trade shows

We will again be exhibiting at this years Specialty Equipment Manufactures Association -which takes place November 4 through 7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Nevada. If you have never attended this show, it has over 1,600 exhibitors and 90,000 attendees. It is quite an industry event.

Our booth is #12456 -in the “Performance and Racing Products” section of the North Hall. Among other products, Land & Sea is displaying our 24" Automotive Chassis Dyno, 2,000 Hp “Pro” Engine Stand, new Small Engine Dyno, and demonstrating the latest DYNO-MAX 2000 “Pro” release.

Then we’re off to the RCA dome for the 2003 PRI trade show (in Indianapolis, Indiana). This huge racing exposition runs from December 4 through 6. Once again we will be in our traditional PRI peninsula booth #3635

We hope you get to at least one of these shows. If you do, please stop by to chat. For more info visit either www.semashow.com or www.performanceracing.com

Question of the month...?

Can the DYNOmite-Pro board set read Platinum RTD’s (Resistance Temperature Detectors)?

Yes, any of the board’s 0-5 volt channels (including the 8-EGT’s) can be wired for RTDs. We can even supply ready made harness connector adapters, with appropriate bias resistors installed.

Making Money from DYNO-MAX’s setup

If you’re using DYNO-MAX 2000, did you know you have a willing assistant -able to save your testing program time and money? This software servant can provide extra hands (to push buttons), prevent embarrassing data entry mistakes, remind you to save test files (or even do it for you), recall favorite test settings, swap your whole test environment upon command, prepare neatly typed reports, help your company with marketing, talk to you when your in trouble, and (most importantly) impress your customers -all for free?

The secret to that lofty sounding is configuring DYNO-MAX 2000 to work the way you need it to. Users that skip customizing their setup waste time (frustrating time) fighting the system. Imagine sweating in your car because you never learned to turn on its air conditioning, or not knowing how to shift out of first gear!

DYNO-MAX 2000 “Pro” is arguably the most comprehensive dynamometer program you can buy on this planet. Its powerful features and custom settings suit thousands of test situations. Although initial setup can be intimidating, take the time and do it right! Because, after that, DYNO-MAX can literally talk to you!

Use DYNO-MAX’s F1-key (On-line Help) to review the topics below about performing common test procedures quicker. Or, use your Priority Phone Support, and we’ll gladly talk you though it!

Tools -Preferences -General sets up things like automatically pressing the New Run, Print, or Save buttons (at the appropriate time). It can create meaningful test file name combinations, in chronological sorting order -without you doing all the typing or ending up with ambiguous names like TEST1, TEST2, etc.

Tools -Preferences -Smart Print Select just what basic data you want printed during testing, with a whole separate set of choices for you when you are ready to output the final report. Combined with the other preference settings, you can create a set up that handles 100% of the testing and printouts -with your laptop PCs lid closed!

Run Information tabs all have checkbox’s that control what prints on either Full or Quick Reports. Make sure you understand how to utilize this feature -in conjunction with Smart Print.

Graph Setup tabs are used to store multiple personalized formats. Use them to analyze runs (your way) in just 1-click. DYNO-MAX even remembers your most recent tab choice.

Automated Test Editor wizards allow building a library of tests.

Formula List Short Names can be edited to mean more to you.

Alarms should be set to monitor your gauges. Be sure to try Voice Alarms for awhile -once you do, you will never test without them.

Console Set Up Editor allows customizing every gauge’s range, title, needle to Formula assignment, alarm limits, and chart line.

Smart Record can intelligently start and stop recordings for you. With the right setup, you can test with your laptop’s lid closed!

Customer Spotlight

Scotty’s Automotive

Scotty’s Automotive, located in Stamford Connecticut, is a full service automotive repair facility. Scott Sobeski, a 30 year veteran of the automotive industry, began expanding his business by offering performance add-ons and services. In addition to offering the basic enhancements such as free flow exhaust systems, carburetion service, etc. he is also a NOS distributor and sells VP Racing Fuels.

Because of the large population of high performance vehicles in the area, Scotty felt that the addition of a chassis dynamometer would be a natural choice -helping to promote more of the performance type of work he is seeking. His 750 horsepower dyno not only generates revenue (on it’s own) but it also gets customers interested in the other services that they offer -which adds to the bottom line!

Secondly, the dynamometer serves as a diagnostic aid -both to reproduce the original drivability complaints, and to verify the repairs. Since installing the Land & Sea chassis dynamometer Scotty’s technicians have been able to cut actual road test time about in half, saving valuable time and adding to billable hours daily.

As a new monthly attraction, Scotty’s is adding dyno days to its ever expanding services. With such a full schedule of activities Scott has been too busy since he bought the dyno to even get his own “ride” onto the machine. He can’t wait to run his Big Block equipped 1970 Chevy Chevelle and shave some time off of the current 10.8’s that he’s running now. Eventually the car will be used to advertise the shop and promote their dynamometer testing services.

DYNO-MAX 2000 9.294 SP #1

This is our most powerful release ever! It adds several new features including: usability enhancements for high volume chassis dyno testing, more adaptive Smart Load and Smart Speed algorithms, new “Pro” exponential Sweep Test modes, “Pro” Pendulum Inertia Calibration tool, “Pro” checkbox for averaging Data Points columns, and a “Pro+” Advanced Data Analysis button for Fast Fourier Translation (FFT) graphing of appropriate data.

User Preference settings for the Data Points’ text size and to automatically highlight that listing’s Peak Hp line were added. Also, these and other custom Preference settings are now maintained during installation of DYNO-MAX 2000 updates. This release, which also includes other minor tweaks is available on our web site’s DYNO-MAX Support area for free downloading (by version 9.29 licensees under a current support plan).

Wireless Rotary Load Cells

A new “Piggyback” Wireless Rotary Torque Transducer Interface daughter board is available for our DYNOmite-Pro board sets. It receives digital data from our DYNOmite Wireless Rotary Torque Traducers and digitally passes this data directly to the Pro board’s buss. This 100% digital interface eliminates the multiple analog conversions, and associated resolution errors, of 0-5 volt products .

The entire interface sandwiches into the DYNOmite’s Data Acquisition housing. This combination's power and compact design may encourage re-evaluation of your own “on-board” test program.

Also, via DYNO-MAX 2000, you can simultaneously capture rotary shaft torque data -right alongside the DYNOmite’s standard load-cell or torque arm readings. This opens up many interesting possibilities for doing efficiency testing and improvements on gear (or belt) drives and transmissions.
