Land & Sea, Inc.’s DYNOmite 24”Chassis Dynamometer

Land & Sea announces a combination steady state and inertial acceleration 24” chassis dyno; designed for both front and rear wheel drive. This system combines an electronically controlled absorption unit with a 24" diameter, medium inertia, roller assembly. The absorber is Land & Sea’s 800 horsepower water brake, with an integral strain gauge equipped torque arm. Also included are a DYNOmite Data Acquisition Computer, DYNO-MAX 2000 software, inductive plug wire RPM pickup, wiring harness, wheel chalks and ratchet tie-down straps.

This chassis dynamometer is a great tool for plotting horsepower curves, comparison testing, and road load simulation. Because it combines inertial rollers with an electronically controllable load, you can perform many tests that simple inertia only (acceleration) units cannot. Stabilizing engine RPM and MPH improves simulation accuracy by duplicating real world engine coolant and oil temperature conditions. During Road Load Simulation DYNO-MAX actually calculates road speed and acceleration based on net delivered horsepower and regulates acceleration accordingly. It can even compare top speed capabilities.

The included DYNO-MAX 2000 software works with your own PC to provide keyboard test control and post run data analysis. DYNO-MAX features configurable analog and digital gauges, for real-time testing and playback. Its powerful graphical interface, inertial compensation, adjustable dampening, exponential spike filtering, and graphing capabilities are often not found on packages costing four times as much!

DYNOmite Eddy Current Dyno for R/C engines

Recently Land & Sea, Inc. and Radio Control Nitro magazine got together to address the need for a small dyno for the R/C industry’s heavy hitters. The unit was designed with 40,000+ RPM nitromethane glow plug engines in mind.

For this extremely high RPM application Land & Sea scaled down its “mini” eddy current dyno to develop an still smaller “micro” eddy current absorber. This unit can read torque changes of as little as .0.0001 foot pounds of torque! And, like its Mini

Land & Sea supplies Custom Chrome’s OEM engine dynos

Custom Chrome, one of the worlds largest manufactures of quality aftermarket parts and accessories for Harley Davidson motorcycles, recently went looking for production line engine dynamometers for its Rev-Tech engine manufacturing facility. When the searching was over, they found themselves at Land & Sea’s Hampstead NH manufacturing facility.

Air Fuel Ratio O2 Sensor Module

We now offer a new ultra-wide band O2 sensor and control module as part of the DYNOmite accessories line. By monitoring the oxygen content of the exhaust, this unit provides direct monitoring of the engine’s A/F ratio. DYNOmite owners can quickly and accurately test air/fuel ration from the engine’s exhaust system.

Included in the kit are the sensor, control module, and harness to plug into the DYNOmite’s Data Acquisition Computer (requires a available 0-5 volt analog channel, Full Function Data Cable and DYNO-MAX 2000 software). The transducer threads into the same 18mm x 1.25 exhaust port as most OEM oxygen sensors utilize.

With its wide 8 through 18 A/F Ratio range O2 sensor, its broad enough for high performance gasoline engine tuning.--and works with most pump fuels. Since the DYNOmite sensor are individually trim matched, multiple sensors can be used for cylinder to cylinder comparisons via a single switched control module. A semi-automatic offset adjustment feature (in free air) means the unit does not have to be returned to Land & Sea, for re-calibration.

Our control module provides a near linear 0-5 volt analog output. Readings can be used directly, with little or no correction mapping over most of the sensors working range. It has typical accuracy of+-2% (even better near the stoichiometric region). With its fast response time, it is even suitable for many transient dynamometer tests.

DYNOmite Dynamometer Facility Expansion Complete

The expansion of our dynamometer manufacturing and training facility is now complete. We increased the capabilities of our dynamometer manufacturing process so that we do everything from the CNC machining of 48” diameter chassis rollers to building the micro-eddy current absorbers and electronic controller boards in-house! Even our DYNO-MAX 2000’s programming is completely done by our own employees, so whether its custom hardware, electronics, or software you need -we are able to handle it all.. .

The additional new engine and chassis test cells provide for a higher volume of training sessions and R&D testing. Customers can check out anything from a huge chassis dynamometer system with above ground lift, to a portable Briggs Kart engine dyno. RPM Performance Parts

In business for 30 years, RPM Performance Parts has shops in Toronto, Canada and Binghamton, NY. The Toronto shop specializes in offshore marine big-blocks, but is also involved with local drag race and circle track teams. The Binghamton shop concentrates on NASCAR modifieds, dirt modifieds, and All Pro engines for customers running at Concord, North Carolina --along with building drag and hot street engines. They also have a unique stock division that handles work for dealers, garages, and do it yourself guys.

Co-owner Cesar Dasilva works in the Toronto shop and has 35 years of experience, while Rick Brush works in the Binghamton shop and is a licensed auto machinist with 30 years experience. Cesar and Rick both have worked on all kinds of dynos and have recently moved up to a full DYNO-MAX 2000 “Pro” equipped system..

Rick says, “I was always looking for a dyno that could be swapped over quickly from a Chevy to a Chrysler to a Ford and then back again. Our shop in Binghamton has on record a dyno session for a B/B Chevy 750 Horse Motor by noon, then a Ford 302 Street Engine dynoed at a respectable 365 HP, and by evening a dyno session for a 340 Chrysler was done. This is all in the same day, and we were home by 8:00pm. The ease in learning the system’s operation and DYNO-MAX program, with just basic skills, was great. I cannot stress enough how priceless the patience technical support from the staff at Land & Sea is! To sum it up, if you cannot after a short while have your engines mounted and ready for a session within an hour, your coffee break was too long.”

DYNO-MAX 2000 adds Smart Load™

When performing servo controlled engine dynamometer testing under DYNO-MAX 2000, you will want to make use of our new Smart Loadservo control algorithm. Smart Load makes it much easier to transition from the unloaded idle state to loaded “Hold RPM” mode.

Without Smart Load you probably notice that, until the engine actually reaches the selected holding point, virtually no absorber resistance is applied. This is because the servo is diligently trying to “help” you pull the engine up to your target RPM by reducing load! It is annoying waiting for the changeover to occur (while listening to a big engine buzzing in “neutral”) especially if you’re aiming for a high Hold RPM!

However, when engaged, Smart Load intelligently differentiates between loaded operation and this initial transition process (an

“Engage ‘Smart Load’ assist” checkbox is available under “Electronics – Configure DYNOmite Controls…”). It instructs DYNO-MAX 2000 to add some load, gradually, as you initially open the engine’s throttle (to bring it to your selected Hold Point). Once the engine is under servo control, Smart Load goes back to sleep until the next time you return to idle! Try it, you will like it!
