RTD Sensors Available

Temperature probe assemblies using Platinum Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are now available. They feature armored stainless steel lead shielding, 4-pin cable connector and 270 ohm bias resistor -for direct connection to your existing DYNOmite-Pro full function harness. RTDs support readings from -100 to over 1,200 Fahrenheit.

Our Air only RTDs probe (#430-458) has an exposed element and heat sink shrouding for faster response time (than liquid models).

Conversely, our Liquid RTD unit (#430-459) has a ¼" NPT thread and is sealed -for direct immersion in oil or water. Note: Liquid probes may still be used for open air measurements.

Each of these new RTD sensors is supported by DYNO-MAX 2000 version 9.3 (or later). Look under any of the 0-5 volt “Electronics Calibrate DYNOmite Channels” transducer selection menus.

Larger AC Absorbers

Our AC (Alternating Current) dynamometer absorber offerings have been expanded to include new 500 and 1,250 horsepower units. This brings the precision control and motoring ability, that only AC dynamometers can offer, to higher power applications. DYNOmite AC Drives and Absorbers combine moderate inertia, motoring ability, and precision load control -all the way down to zero RPM.

At almost $400,000 a 1,200 Hp AC absorber is 50x the price of a water brake! But, variable frequency AC dynamometers provide the most advanced load control capabilities that you can buy -faster than water or eddy current brakes and without the high inertia and maintenance of (brushed) DC motor based systems.

115, 208, 230, 460, and 600 volt drives -in either 3-phase or 1-phase (for lower voltages & Hp) -are available. Dives can be ordered with an optional integral programming module (and LCD readout) to aid in configuring them to your specific application.

AC Absorbers are ideal for programming sophisticated simulations. Besides lightning fast response, our motor/generators deliver full torque all the way down to the zero RPM range -especially useful for stall testing electric motors. They can be configured to “motor” your test engines , which in addition to providing a convenient way to start the engine, allows testing frictional cranking loads, etc.

With capacities ranging from ½ to over 1,200 Horsepower, there is an AC drive and motor/generator combination to suit almost any application. Larger installations can even be equipped for regenerative dynamic braking -feeding the engine’s horsepower back into the utility’s grid… for an electric bill credit!

Cigarette Lighter RPM Pick-up

Chassis dyno operators will enjoy the convenience of reading engine RPM by simply plugging into the vehicle’s “cigarette lighter” (12-volt auxiliary power outlet). This new pick-up’s signal amplifier and multi-stage filter circuitry extracts engine RPM from inductive pulses (“noise spikes”) induced into the vehicle’s 12-volt wiring -by the ignition coil’s firing.

Works on most (although not all) domestic and foreign spark ignition vehicles. Please contact sales for details and ordering information. (Note: Requires DYNO-MAX 2000.)

Making Money -via our upgrade trade-in deal… for older DYNOmite Data Computers

Do you have an earlier handheld DYNOmite-I or DYNOmite-II Data Acquisition Computer that you wish could run DYNO-MAX 2000? But, have you been holding off upgrading -because your budget won't allow spending $1,000 for the required electronics upgrade? Well, now you have a way to cash in on your earlier investment -with a 100% trade-up credit.

Until March 31, 2004 owners can modernize to a DYNO-MAX 2000 ready, 15-channel, data acquisition computer -for only $499. In fact, if you’re running a DYNOmite-II, you can even utilize its existing wiring harness.

This is a one-time opportunity to get serious at this discounted price. So, if you have not already taken a look at what DYNO-MAX 2000 can do for your testing results (and bottom line), call for our free Multimedia Demo Tour CD. We know you will wish you had made this advancement a long time ago!

DYNOmite-Pro Spark Advance

A new Ignition Spark Advance Option can now be added to any DYNOmite-Pro board set -without purchasing expensive high speed PCI cards or requiring the “Pro+” Oscilloscope Module! The EEPROM Spark Advance upgrade allows capturing and displaying real-time ignition advance data during engine dynamometer testing.

Note: An Inductive RPM Pick-Up (to signal the spark’s occurrence) and a crankshaft mounted RPM pick-up (to which also serves as a position reference) are required as well.

Graphing ignition timing alongside RPM and torque makes it easier to isolate power changes (or detonation problems) between your ignition and fuel curves. This is a must for developing and tuning race engines. It’s also a great way to catch spark scatter problems.

This unique option is just one more advantage to DYNOmite-Pro technology. Call today to order this $299 bargain add-on.

Question of the month...?

How does calculated Air/Fuel Ratio using air flow and fuel flow turbines (or other flow sensors) compare in accuracy, and response time, to using Wide Band O2 sensors?

Actually the response time (from either hardware method) is in the 10-ms range with a calibrated accuracy approaching 1% of full scale. But, there are still pros and cons to each approach.

O2 sensors are practical for multi-cylinder installation or chassis dyno testing. However, turbines measure actual mass flow (not just ratios) -vital for serious engine development. So, if you can afford both, that is the best way to go -on the engine stand at least!

German Motor Cars

German Motor Cars, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio has been servicing fine European automobiles (with a focus on Porsche) since 1981. Founder, Forry Hargitt, has been associated with the automobile business since 1973 and has received extensive training in the repair and service of Porsche automobiles.

More recently, Forry is particularly involved in the design and implementation of performance upgrades and race car preparation. As a Porsche Club Member (since 1981) he has held various positions within the local Ohio region. And, in addition to running the shop, he has developed, written, and copyrighted a computer software package -designed specifically for the automobile service industry.

While Forry’s shop does a lot of Porsche engine development work (on both normally aspirated and turbo charged engines), he and his colleagues are constantly developing ways to increase power output and reliability for all European engines. Results, both good and bad, are analyzed using their DYNOmite “Pro” 1600 Engine Dynamometer and their DYNOmite 24" Chassis Dynamometer. With so many variables it would be impossible, to know with any degree of certainty, if changes made to an engine were positive or negative without the DYNOmite dynamometer systems.

German Motor Cars was one of the first automotive repair facilities in the US to install both a DYNOmite engine dynamometer and chassis dyno. This gives them the unique advantage of being able to expertly demonstrate the difference and reality of honest delivered rear-wheel Hp vs. those “adjusted” numbers -from that other brand of chassis “dyno.” For more info on German Motor Cars visit www.germanmotorcars.com
