(603) 226-DYNO

Land & Sea’s Liquid Cooled Eddy-Current Absorber (brake) and Electronic Control kits offer an affordable way to build your own state-of-the-art, industrial-duty engine or chassis dynamometer. They are also ideal for restoring older DC or eddy-current  dynamometers.

“Do you have a custom dynamometer application? We manufacture many eddy current units in-house – so give us a call!”

Compared to water-brake absorbers, they are especially well suited for applications that require plenty of low RPM torque capacity - as do many industrial-type engines. For applications which do not require motoring or stall-speed (zero RPM) loading, our liquid -cooled eddy current absorbers offer more cost-effective loading than equivalent capacity AC absorber (motor) and drive can. For applications that demand high RPM limits, lower system inertia, and continuous-duty (temperature independence) water-cooled eddy-current absorbers are the ideal solution.Click to enlarger liquid-cooled eddy-current absorber cutaway.

We manufacture these absorbers as both single and multi-rotor configurations, in a number of diameter ranges. We cover the testing of everything from tiny 20,000-RPM two stokes to 1,200-Hp diesels. Rotors are added to increase power capacity, without limiting peak RPM, while rotor diameter is increased for boosting low-RPM torque capacity. W We manufacture these units in-house, machining and balancing their rotors, winding custom-voltage coils, and assembling the ideal stack-up to meet your application's load curve. Their modular design also allows for the possibility of upgrading capacity - if your power requirements increase.

A rocker switch provides a manual mode (panel knob or 0-10 volt analog input) and an auto mode - via digital PID output leads from the DYNOmite data-acquisition computer. Panel circuit breakers are matched to the absorber, protecting its magnetic coil's windings. An optional differential-pressure switch, is available - to lockout coil current if coolant-flow drops. Temperature-sensor ports are also provided for monitoring the inlet and outlet water.

Various shaft mounting choices are offered, including customin designs to your prints.  The standard keyed shaft units are most commonly supported between a pair of trunnion block bearings. This allows reading the reaction torque via a load cell that is linked to the absorber’s trunnioned frame. Alternatively, optional flat-flange models couple with matching bolt-pattern driveshaft U-joint assemblies. Larger absorbers have a set of mounting holes in their housings for fixing them to the dynamometer’s stand or to a reaction cradle/table.

Custom hybrid configurations can can also be designed using a combination of both an electronic, typically AC, absorber (for fast torque control) and a high-capacity eddy-current absorber (for inexpensively adding very-high test power capacity). Control of the pair is handled via DYNO-MAX “Pro. While their complexity is typically only justified for some sophisticated high-output applications, hybrids make it possible to cost effectively build lower inertia and faster response dynamometers, (with motoring capabilities) than can be had using any single braking technology alone.

High speed spindle bearings and their grease seals provide extra long life for extended industrial or OEM endurance testing applications. Our lliquid-cooled eddy current absorbers feature Zerk grease fittings for easier maintenance, while auto-lube systems are available as an option. Most replacement bearings and their seals are available locally, and they are engineered for convenient field replacement. These features are combined into a design which minimizes the number of moving wear parts, rendering expensive downtime a non-issue.

Need parts for an old eddy-current dyno? As a manufacturer of eddy-current dyno absorbers, we can often repair otherwise obsolete units. L&S does everything, from modernizing power supplies and controls to custom winding replacement coils for “Brand-X” dynamometers.
